Members of the working group N. Fenenko, E. Chaika, M. Shcherbakova, V. Ivanova, T. Kozyura analysed the process of preparation of language teachers and the development of their professional competence in the Russian Federation; the research was carried out in Voronezh State University and Voronezh State Pedagogical University and included the systematisation of information, description of the entrance conditions, the duration and content of the curriculum, the quality and effectiveness of training, opportunities for professional development, etc.
They also organised a survey among the teachers of the English, German and French languages working in secondary schools in the city of Voronezh and the Voronezh region, as well as graduate students from the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology (VSU). Questioning was held not only in the electronic form; for those who did not have access to the Internet, paper-based questionnaires were prepared – this allowed about 150 people to take part in this survey.
The survey revealed the needs of language teachers in the training and continuing education, consisting in general in the fact that alongside with the development of their basic professional and pedagogical skills, teachers pay great attention to the possibility of access to the conditions necessary for developing their individual professional style. These conditions, in the view of language teachers of secondary schools in Voronezh and the Voronezh region, primarily include the use of information and communication technologies, learning the experience of foreign pedagogical and methodological expertise, the ability to communicate and improve their methodological and language skills with the help of communication with native speakers of the languages they teach.
